Ideki & Araki

PaRT 3: HaTCHiNG
Clouds hung heavy over Blue Sky Weyr when the call that the clutches were hatching came. Araki jumped out of his bed and shook Ideki awake.
"they're hatching!" he called to his friend while he was already putting on the Impression robe.
Ideki rose, albeit slower than the friend that had been searched with him. He also stepped into his impression robe, happy that the piece of clothing was simple and easy to don. He fumbled a bit with the buckle before he finally managed to get everything on right.
"Come on!" Araki called out, "We'll be late."
That brought Ideki back to his senses and his steps hastened. Araki, moving even faster toward the hatching sands. The rain falling down on them, soaking them to the bone.
"I don't think these robes were made to withstand the rain." Araki called over his shoulder, "Quicker!"
"Wait a sec! I'm only half awake!" Ideki called back.
"No way! It's every candidate for himself!" Araki laughed and dashed the last metres to the hatching sands, nearly diving into it.
Ideki arrived only seconds later, just as wet as his friend. "Are we still on time?" he whispered.
"I don't see any dragons yet." Araki said hopeful.
They were in fact on time, but most of the other candidates had already entered, which meant Araki and Ideki had tgo stand way in the back.
That was also why they only saw the eggs when most of the hatching of the two clutches was nearly over. Neither of them had kept a count, but both were eager to get a dragon.
Finally they came more to the center of the circle with eggs and the prospect of impressing. Araki looked at the eggs, staring with all his concentration, while Ideki closed his eyes, only occasionally peering through his eyelids.
Two blues hatched, both of them approached Ideki, and when they realized that the other was heading for him, they began to fight. Their wings flapped and their tails slashed. And all ideki could do was look around in wonder, his eyes no longer closed. To impress one dragon was luck, to have two dragons fight over you was a compliment, but Ideki knew only one could impress him... and what would happen to the other? Araki finally made a decision for him.
"No!" he exclaimed, stepping forward between the two angry hatchlings, and the fight stopped. "Oshasosth," he said, unsure where the name came from. "Leave him alone, you hear?" he said to the one facing him.
That split second was all blue Solanth needed to announce himself to Ideki.
"I win!"

Araki and Ideki didn't wait another minute when the weyrling trainer gave them the day off. There were few free days as it were and neither of them felt the need to stay around long enough for the headwoman to find them and give them something to do.
Araki jumped onto Oshasosth and not much Later, Ideki was securely attached to Solanth's back.
"Let's go!" Araki called out and Oshasosth lifted from the ground, closely followed by Solanth. Not much later they were off, through the between and to their favourite hangout spot.
Their spot was on a mountain plateau, a large lake forming a placid mirror between the trees. They usually had to share the lake with a whole swarm of boys from nearby holds, and today was no different. However, the young kids always loved to bathe the dragons.
"I like it when the tickle me." Solanth said, his eyes already turning sapphire-blue in anticipation."
"I bet you do." Ideki said fondly to his dragon, "You're very ticklish."
"I like it more when they play with my feet." Oshasosth announced.
"What kind of a dragon do you have?" Ideki asked.
"One that loves footrubs." Araki winked, "One that maybe would have been better of being a green."
"Don't tease!" Oshasosth called, doing a backflip, making Araki scream in delight.
"Why does he say those things?" Solanth wanted to know.
"Just to make Oshasosth do things like that." Ideki told hisblue, "And don't ever do them with me. I'd be hurling before we were fully straight up again.
"And that takes hours to clean..."
"Whose the green now?" Araki called at his friends.
"That means war!" Ideki called out and directed Solanth toward the other blue.
Oshasosth deftly dove into the water, his rider still on his back. Then Ideki softly landed in a nearby field.
By the time Ideki was on solid ground again, Araki and Oshasosth had resurfaced, both dripping wet and Araki shivering from the sudden bath in cold water.
"Cooled off?" Ideki asked casually.
Witgh a loud roar, Araki launched himself toward himself and a semi-friendly wrestling match began. Finally Ideki had to give up, as soon as he did that, it took Araki only seconds before he had his friend where he wanted him. Dripping and shivering in the lake.
"You could use a bath." He said laughing out loud.
"So I guess we're even." Ideki shrugged.
"Not even close!"

Araki touched down first. Granted, Oshasosth might not have landed as gracefully as his brother Solanth, but they had been fastest and that was what the message business was all about.
"I don't like carrying around messages." Oshasosth replied grumpily.
Araki looked up in surprise that his by default cheerful dragon should suddenly act as the cockiest bronze around.
"What do you hate?" he heard Ideki ask.
"Carrying around messages." his Solanth replied.
"Now that was weird." Araki said as Ideki got closer.
"What?" Ideki asked.
"Both our dragons suddenly saying they don't like carrying around messages."
"Well we have been taking a lot of them lately, I'm not too fond of them either... but they do get paid well."
"Yes and they are good practice. It's not like the other jobs are any better in times of interval." Araki shrugged.
"Heh, if we stay a few days resting maybe they'll come to their senses." Ideki suggested.
"Yeah, while we make up for lost time by doing chores here."
"It could be worse." Ideki said.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, I could still be in the high north of Pern digging for gems and ore." Ideki shuddered, "I still get goosebumps when I think of the cold."
"I know a thing we could do while we are resting here." Solanth said cunningly.
"Now we're going to have it." Araki said deviously, "They have plans..."
"Not so much as plans..." Oshasosth said, "More like intentions."
"What?" Ideki asked.
"I could go for a good chase." Solanth said.
"Yes, there will be a pretty female rising here within days." Oshasosth added, "She's worth the wait."
"To you maybe."
"It won't be bad for you either." Solanth said, "I've heard her rider is pretty."
"What do you know about that?" Ideki said.
"You need a girlfriend."
"Great, I've been given love-advice by a dragon."
"You can stoop no lower." Araki added laughing.
"You would do well to find one for your own as well, my rider." Oshasosth added casually.
"Heh! We're in this together friend!" Araki smiled broadly.
"But after this... we're even!" Ideki called out.
"Not by a long shot!"
