Sermillion &
Brilliant Sea Zaless

The Hatching
Sermillion descended to the underwater cave that held the shadow eggs. The eggs themselves were a marvel. They weren't shaking like any other egg. In stead they seemed to bulge and retract with slowly moving black swirls on their shells.
Carefully Sermillion got closer, closely followed by Tressen. Tressen stopped at a respectful distance and let Sermillion find his own place. When all the candidates had filed in the hatching began. Sermillion eyed the small black feathery hatchlings with greed in his eyes.
To his astonishment Tressen bonded before him. The hatchling, a small medium land passed right by him, ignoring his rank. Sermillion fumed for a while. He was so lost in himself that he missed the two strange impressions that followed.
Sermillion didn't miss the one after that. A small serpentine creature with bright white eyes hatched. It seemed helpless, but it wasn't. From the moment it was born it knew who it wanted. The Brilliant Sea Shadowling lifted his body and flew toward him, a strange energy crackling in the air between them.
"Sermillion!" he smiled.
"Yes Zaless?" Sermillion asked.
"Can we go for a swim? I feel like devouring a few fish." the brilliant smiled, "but then, why wait... I'm hungry now."
Suddenly a splattering fish appeared in front of the brilliant who ate it whole.
"I think they have prepared food for us, Zaless." Sermillion said.
"I'm there!" the young sea-snake said as he wrapped himself around his bond.

Adulthood
After bonding, Zaless grew at an astonishing rate. His days were filled with eating and sleeping, his shadowy form always around Sermillion who'd grown used to the foggy wet scent that reminded him of wet dog and smoke.
"It is about time." Zaless said one day.
"Time for?"
"Finding our place. I'm certain we can do more when we keep out of sight."
"We could always return to Gremyne." Sermillion offered, "I'm certain the castle that once housed the monastery of Luxior will be empty and waiting with the hex I put on the place."
Zaless snickered, the prospect of living in a haunted mansion did seem fitting.
