HATCHING
Riri had not expected the errand Headmistress Amasia had sent her on, would include standing for a hatching. But then, the headmistress was known to plot and not divulge her plans like most harpers did. It was an annoying habit but nothing Riri did now would change things. If a dragon found her worthy, she would take care of it like the fields back at home. If none did, when it would be fun to see Headmistress Amasia's plans foiled for once.
But the very first egg that hatched at Lelohinith's clutch at White River Weyr would change her fate. A hatchling rolle out. Riri could not tell it's colour since it had inherited the opalescent hue that made both it's parents so peculiar. But only seconds later, she found him... she had a sneaking suspicion as how she suddenly knew the hatchling was a he... wandering closer to her.
The hatchling caught her gaze with a look that promised a strong character but when her mind bonded together, she could only sense clean joy and enthusiasm for their presence.
"My name is Inaolth." her bond whispered in her mind.

"I shall win!" Inaolth declared.
"I'm certain you will." Riri agreed.
Her dragon was pumping himself up before joining a flight. But Riri knew it wasn't just determination that decided the outcome of a flight. There was also wit, speed, stamina. And the competition was just as determined to win... not to mention that the rising females often had a preference and some had been known to give in to their favourites as clutches on Pern needn't be as big as before.
"But regardless. I shall win." Inaolth declared.
"I'll do all I can to make it so." Riri promised.
After all, a rider's preferences were also taken into account these days. She might not be as charming as others, but she did have her qualities.
