STORY
Xelt breathed in the moist air of the jungle. The air was heavy with the scent of greenery, soil and life. He loved nothing better than to test his skills in survival like this. With just the clothes on his back and his wits to keep him out of trouble. He'd done variations of this trip numerous times before, in vastly different terrains and climates. He could count on his wind magic to keep him warm and on his hunting skills to keep him fed.
The toughest journey he'd faced had been one in a volcanic wasteland. Compared to that, the jungle was a breeze. His Elf senses picked up cues and hints from all the trees and plants around him. It didn't matter that he couldn't see the sky or that the shrubs grew so dense that advancing was difficult. The jungle showed him which path to take to advance. Although Xelt usually preferred a more challenging trip, a relaxing one was nice on occasion. He would recharge his batteries here, return to his duties and then plan something wilder for his enxt adventure.
Xelt felt more than saw a disturbance up ahead. Something was approaching one of his traps. He'd just have to wait a little bit longer and then he'd be set for dinner. He nudged the wind to guide his prey into the trap only to realise when the wind returned that it wasn't an animal that was going to fall prey....

Xelt approached his trap, fearing that whomever he'd nudged inside might be unconscious or dead. There'd been no cries, no flailing to try and get loose. Observing carefully, he saw a small form dangling. He wondered briefly if he'd caught a child but then the rope twisted and he saw the lines and grooves on the halfling's face. His pointed ears drooped down and his entire body was tense with fear. Hardly an enemy to fear.
While stammering an apology Xelt cut the halfling, Francois, down:
"There shouldn't have been people near here, at least not those with good intentions." the look Xelt gave Francois was one of suspicion. "The travel agency assured me the group trip that sometimes camps out would not be anywhere near here."
"I got lost." Francois confessed.
Xelt had to agree that the Halfling did not look like he was savvy enough to eke out an existence by living a life of crime. But looks could be deceiving.
"Well, it was my fault you got tangled up. I'll guide you to the nearest settlement as an apology."
The two men made introductions and went on their way.

"How far did I stray from the route?" Francois asked.
"You must have wandered in the wrong direction as the travel group stays near the edge of the jungle. How long did you say you'd been walking?" Xelt asked.
"It's hard to tell honestly.
I think half a day."
"Which shouldn't have brought you all the way out here." Xelt mused, "Stranger things have happened though."
Francois glanced around, wondering what strange things could cause a person to travel leagues in an instant. Was this jungle haunted? Were there other forces at play? Maybe that seeer hadn't been a quack...
"What prompted you to take a trip to the jungle when you obviously don't really like the outdoors?"
Xelt noticed his travel companion drooping again and wanted to change the topic, only, the Elf just happened to ask the one question that caused Francois to deflate even more.
"My mother had consulted a seeer who told her my destiny lay here." Francois answered truthfully.
"As in your death?" Xelt asked, blunt as ever.
"As in my fated partner."
"Destiny is a broad concept though. Maybe you'll fall in love with this place and decide to stay?"
Francois laughed when the seeer's words were so cleanly analysed.
"I guess that could also be it. Although I doubt I'd ever come to like the jungle."
"I'd stake money on that." Xelt grinned, "But the communities around here are close-knit and some have spectacular boons. Like the one we're heading for right now. It's suppoed to have dragon companions."
Francois froze on the spot.
"And you say it's safe?"
"They're the kind of dragons that bond with others. They supposedly form a life-long bond.... Hey do you suppose?"
"I can't imagine myself bonding with a dragon. Look at me!" Francois complained, "I'm short and feeble!"
"That's not what all dragons look for. I can tell you're dutiful and honest. Those are good qualities in a partner."
"What about you?" Francois asked, "Why haven't you gone and bonded a dragon?"
"I never thought about it? I've been getting along well on my own. I love to take trips like this, get in a little thrill every now and then before I have to get back to work."
"So, wouldn't bonding with a dragon be thrilling?"
"Maybe."
The two dropped the topic but it lingered in the back of their minds while they continued walking.  Both figured that as long as they were there, they could maybe see if the locals would allow them a chance.

HATCHING
Xelt had been assigned to a different clutch from Francois. The Halfling had bonded earlier and was already training. Pairing with a dragon had changed something and Xelt somehow felt that he was ready for that change too. To grow as a person.
Nobody knew what would hatch from these eggs. Their parents were as different as could be. But that unknown was something Xelt enjoyed. So when the first egg hatched, everyone, from the candidates to the spectators to the parents of this clutch, seemed to hold their breath. One nose poked out, followed by a long face with ears and a mane. Then another nose poked up. Followed by a sleek body and long tail. Just looking at their build, Xelt knew these babies would be fast.
Xelt waited, trying to project an open mind, but his thoughts kept getting in the way. The petite white and yellow one had the spunk to keep up with the hulking red dragon. And right he was for she'd headed straight toward him. As he kept making bets in his mind, there was one red and yellow hatchling that he couldn't quite place. He kept pacing, almost as if he was impatient or bored. Was his bond not around?
"No, he's just preoccupied with my siblings." the snarky reply came back.
"Just go pounce him.... oh." Xelt exhaled when he was hit with a little hunk of dragon.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Kraolza."

ADULT
"Are we ready yet?" Kraolza queried.
"You heard the trainer, we just need a little bit more and then we'll be allowed to head out on our own."
"I don't know why he's so strict with us."
"It might have something to do with our tendency to take risks." Xelt hinted.
"That's on you as well."
"I know. Let's try to keep ourselve sin check next exercise and likely that will be enough."
"And then we can do as we please."
"Of course." Xelt said and then coughed, "Within reason."
After all you never knew who might be listening in. They really needed to graduate before they could set off on a new adventure. One that would dwarf the others. They could go explore entire worlds. Galaxies! Xelt could hardly wait.
