Student's Day Out

FIVE: HATCHING
It had rained for the past three days. Not only was it rain, it was nearly a tropical storm with winds hurling the rain down in unimaginable corners and thunder rolling above. Inside the weyrhall where all Earth-Clutch candidates were gathered, games were being played to pass the time.
"Check." Neeku exclaimed.
Ese grumbled and moved her horse in front of her besieged king. Beside her Seena was watching the game between the two of them. She was bored out of her skull, but there were no cards at Falas and the only game left had been the chess board. So the three of them had taken turns playing.
Ese sighed as she was deftly moved into checkmate position by her opponent. She too was getting bored of chess which reflected in her play.
"You're getting too confident." Neeku remarked.
"I don't care much anymore." Ese sighed, "You want to play next Seena?"
"I say we play: I spy.."
"Not again!" Neeku called out.
"Let's just go sleep." Ese remarked.
"I don't think I'll be able to sleep." Seena grumbled.
"Well we can talk there." Neeku shrugged.
About an half hour past while they lay in their beds. They talked about falas, the clutch, but also about home, missed tv-programs and forgotten dentist appointments. Chance and Cayleigh lay curled up on the beds. they too had had enough of the dreary weather that prevented them from playing outside.
Suddenly Chance woke up, tensed up and barked shortly. Cayleigh too soon joined her.
"What's happening?" Ese asked, waking up.
Neeku and Seena who'd been talking got up and opened the door.
"I think it's happening." Neeku said dryly.
"We need to get ready." Seena called.
After they'd dressed themselves in the white robes and had hurried toward the hatching sands, the three of them entered. The sands were being hastily lit by glows while the humming of the dragons which the dogs had picked up on grew louder. The candidates were asked to form a semi-circle around the eggs. Then there was nothing left to do but wait.
Well into the hatching, three browns met each other in the throng after searching and dodging some of the more eager candidates. One of the browns touched Ese Martyr’s hand and looked up, tilting her head with a draconic smile that told Ese everything that she needed to know.
My name is Astlith, Ese.
As she knelt to scratch Astlith’s eye ridge, a light green and green came toward the three girls from Belgium. Seena Martyr fell to her knees when light green Naneth said her name clearly before proclaiming her extreme hunger.
Naneth is hungry, Seena! Make it better!
The other green didn’t move so Neeku Nimken stepped forward cautiously and touched the green’s nose as if she wasn’t quite sure she was doing the right thing.
Of course you are, silly! Now how about on my shoulder, right where it’s dry. Neeku did as asked and the dragonet crooned contentedly. Much better. Thank you.
“You're...you're welcome Thaunth...”

SIX: DIRECTING
Now that the girls and their dragons were training things had gotten more strict. But years of school and social gatherings had strengthened them to the regime they were presented with. Ese vehemently hated cleaning duty, but after a while she noticed that she could actually enjoy the end result. Mostly they managed to divide the chores evenly so that no-one was stuck with their least favourite job.
The three of them enjoyed the practical lessons with the dragons most. Neeku of course, with her strong intellect, was well on her way to the top of the class, while Ese who didn't leave the barracks without paper and pen had swiftly become the entire class' syllabus provider. Seena on the other hand being the most fearless of the three excelled at the flying preparation lessons.
Still as time approached the girls were feeling more and more homesick. Especially Ese was pressing the others to return home as soon as their dragons could fly. She missed her family, dog and basically her own little routine. Though how a dragon might fit in she could not say yet.

SEVEN: GIRL's MOVIE NIGHT
Back on Earth, the three dragons fully grown, Ese, Neeku and Seena had gathered one evening for a special movie night. Hidden away in the forest of their local town, the two sisters had hidden away a small screen and a laptop. At dusk they gathered along with Neeku and their dragons. installing themselves on blankets, and munching of the various treats they'd brought. Two green and one brown hump and an occasional glowing blue eye betrayed the location of their dragons just a few feet away.
"Which movie are we going to watch?" Ese asked.
"A horror!" Seena yelled.
"A thriller maybe." Neeku added.
"No-one up for a romantic comedy?" Ese sighed.
It's late and dark, we need to see something suspensy." Seena insisted.
Finally, with 5 against 1, the horror flick, a suspicious B-rated movie of women getting lost in the woods which Ese was sure to give her heart some strain, won. The night was filled with screams, laughing and the occasional giggle before everyone quieted down to retire. Their night had been a success and would be repeated more than once in the future.
